This course continues to build on work done in the First Year. The intention is to develop students’ understanding and use of French in the areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Class lectures are based on interactive methods and approaches whereby participants are encouraged to be creative, problem-solving users of the language at intermediate level. Literary and non-literary French texts selected from various sources will be used, with the aim of stimulating critical reading and discussion. Class activities will also be supported by audio-visual and web-based materials which will help students to familiarize themselves further with the actual usage of the language. Conversation groups will be arranged separately to practice spoken French. This course is taught in the first semester of the academic year.
Objectives
The aim of this course is to develop students’ language proficiency at a higher level by building on the skills acquired at previous level. The main objective is to investigate further important grammatical topics such as syntax and morphology and to acquire more vocabulary so as to facilitate oral and written expression and comprehension in the French language. The overall aim of the course is to bring students to a stage consistent with the level A2+/B1 as defined and established by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).
Learning outcomes
1) Apply the knowledge and skills acquired throughout this course to communicate on selected topics and collaborate in French. 2) Understand and discuss important aspects of the French language, culture and society. 3) Use the insight gained through listening, discussing, reading and writing about the topics covered to appreciate differences and commonalities between French culture and their own. 4) Use the French language at a level of intermediate proficiency consistent with level A2+/B1 of the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFRL).
