After graduating from the Ecole Supérieure d'Art graphique in Paris and a short spell in advertising as a graphic designer, Olivier Tallec devoted himself to illustration. Since then he has done numerous illustrations for newspapers and magazines and has published over 60 books for children.

His works combine imagination and creativity, beautifully and wordlessly capturing the petty dramas which seem so important at the time of childhood.

posted 17/04/10 : Talk: A Floating Sense of Selves: Kikou Yamata's Mediation of Japan

Date: 5 May 2010 (Wednesday)
Time: 4:30 to 6:00 pm
Venue: Main Building,
Convocation Room
University of Hong Kong
Language: English
All are welcome

Dr. Denis C. Meyer
School of Modern Languages and Cultures, HKU

Born in Lyon to a French mother and a Japanese diplomat, Kikou Yamata (1897-1975) has authored a substantial number of texts in diverse genres, some written in Japanese, the majority in French. This talk undertakes to read Yamata's literary legacy from three standpoints: her role as a cultural mediator; her position as a woman writer and her subsequent reappraisal of the reified Oriental femininity and, finally, her coming to terms with her French-Japanese identity. These three standpoints are, in fact, closely intertwined, for they all converge towards various types of othernesses: woman as sexual other, Japan as topographical other and hybridity as racial other. We shall therefore attempt to ascertain the extent to which Yamata's writings may convey an innovative perspective on the long-standing East-West politics of othering and its inferred motifs at work in literary fiction and elsewhere. Also, we shall investigate the theme of floating self in Yamata's writings, with a view to assessing its potential to break free from the dialectics of hegemony and alienation subsumed in the traditional East-West representation.

Dr Denis C. Meyer is Director of the French programme and a Deputy Head in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures. His present research and teaching areas comprise the political and cultural history of France, modern French literature, cultural mediation and representation and the didactics of French language and culture. His recent publications include the two following books (in French): A Floating World: Kikou Yamata's Cultural Mediation of Japan, Paris, L'Harmattan, 2009; and Keys to France in 80 Cultural Icons, Paris, Hachette, 2010.

Date: 14 April 2010 (Wednesday)
Time: 1:00 to 2:30 pm
Venue: Room CYC-A
Chow Yei Ching Building
University of Hong Kong
Language: English
All are welcome

Dr. Alain Le Pichon
Research Associate, European Studies
School of Modern Languages and Cultures, HKU

This talk is a personal attempt at characterizing the salient features of the French language as it developed from the Renaissance to the present day. It investigates the different forces at play, from the practice of writers and poets to that of vernacular speakers, from the desire for freedom expressed by many to the enforcement of linguistic rules and regulations decided by a central authority. It also investigates the unusual dichotomy found in the French language between two forms of orality – the spoken language and the prosody found in poetry and in the “Chanson française” – both functioning in structurally different ways, though allowing interplays between them as markers of class, education or humour. Finally, it will consider the differences in mental attitudes hidden in the architecture of French sentences compared with sentences produced by the English language. The talk will be given in English. The many illustrations will of course be delivered in the original French.

Alain Le Pichon was born and educated in France. After graduating from the Ecole Normale Supérieure at St Cloud, and from Oxford (Christ Church), he took his Agrégation in English and went on to teach at Eton. He subsequently joined an English merchant-bank in the City and later in New York. He now lives in Hong Kong and Paris and, until his retirement at the end of 2009, he taught British cultural History at the Sorbonne. He has published books and articles on British trade in the East and on Hong Kong's colonial history and society. His China Trade and Empire was published by Oxford University Press for the British Academy. It is the first edition of letters written during the period 1825-1843 by the founders of Jardine, Matheson & Co. This latest work – Bethanie and Nazareth, French Secrets from a British Colony – recalls the presence and activities of the French missionaries in Hong Kong. He was recently appointed Honorary Research Associate in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures of the University of Hong Kong.
